In recent years, the wine industry has benefited from an influx of organizations dedicated to mentorship—both to open doors for passionate individuals who want to enter the wine business and to create avenues for wine professionals to move up or perhaps change course and pursue a different sector of the industry. How can we ensure that mentorship initiatives—including our personal commitment to it—truly foster the well-being of communities and build culture together, versus working as a simple charitable act?

36% of small business owners globally are women. In the last 20 years, the number of businesses owned by women in the U.S. has increased by 114%, dominating beauty, health, and fitness industries. Women-owned businesses are also on the rise in the wine world. So, what does success look like for these women? How does one build a business while maintaining balance with personal obligations and passions? This conversation lends perspectives from women leading enterprises of all shapes and sizes, to share their stories and look at how women can better support each other in their endeavors.

Is the current lack of financial transparency a barrier to cultivating diversity in the wine industry? What are the principal factors that contribute to the gender pay gap? What additional challenges do BIPOC communities face in terms of salary negotiation? This panel, in collaboration with ARENI Global, will address these questions and more in relation to both employees, employers, and freelancers, in order to assess what opportunities and challenges exist in working towards greater remuneration transparency.

From sexual harassment to racial bigotry, prejudiced mistreatment continues to encumber the creation of welcoming workplaces. While first and foremost, one must be able to identify it, equally important is having the tools to address it correctly. This session will explore personal experiences and provide training and resources to implement proactive responses to the many forms of harassment we may encounter, and look ahead to build a larger discussion about advocacy.

For better or for worse, many lives have changed dramatically since the start of the pandemic last year. Between the struggles of the hospitality sector and the boom of wine retail—layered with blurred boundaries between home and work, evaporation of job security, and all-around uncertainty of the future—this chapter has been a challenging one for many, both professionally and personally. However, there is a silver lining and as we welcome restaurant re-openings and vaccine roll outs, it is growing more visible. This panel of wine industry professionals from both on- and off-trade will speak about their experiences and how we can best operate in this new normal.
